Is this RPM normal?

#1 Unread post by xRider »

I was riding my new bike a bit and was wondering if this RPM is normal. I was in 4th gear and going 50kmph and the RPM was 5000. The bike has 5 gears and can go up to 100kmph so is this normal?

Yea
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

Ummm what? It's a fixed ratio. If your clutch and chain aren't slipping it will always be a certain RPM in a certain gear at a certain speed.

Marc, you'll find (generally) the bigger the engine the lower the RPM at X speed (for the same type of engine, ie, 4 cyl or twin).

To answer your question, 4,000 rpm at any speed is fine. What you want is a sweet spot between "cruising along" and "get out of the way power" ... so if crusing along is at 3,500 rpm and get out of the way power starts a 5,500 rpm, then 4,000 is good.

Keep asking your questions, I'm sure you are learning more and more each day from the answers. :D

Every bike is different, but generally prefer higher revs. I have an 85 Nighthawk 650, and at first I was running it routinely between 3K-4K. My dad then told me they like it higher....4K at the lowest, probably ideally at 5K.

All of a sudden I went from avg. 40 MPG to about 50 MPG. So I would consult a forum for your specific make/model.

Wait a minute...in 4th gear @ 5000 rpm your doing 50 thousand miles per hour?
