I have a 900 Vulcan. So far it's been great. Prior to that I had a 650 V-Star....it travelled many miles through some high mountain roads and winding roads...You'll probably have a lot of un on the 650 Vulcan.

Welcome to TMW. My advice to you is to sign up for your motorcycle training (MSF in the States or at your local college in Canada) as they will save your life when you get on the road and usually help you to get licensed to start with. You should be fine with either of the bikes you mentioned. A cruiser will be a more forgiving ride, but I also suggest you try a full face helmet. Somewhere around 75% of people who come off motorcycles hit the ground with some part of their chin. Unless they are wearing a full face helmet...

Ride safe. Ride often.
Jock

Ride Safely. Respect nature. Always wear a helmet.
