OK, now I have a dumb question, but I don't know the answer so here goes: what's the difference between brake fluid and hydraulic fluid? The system is running both cylinders from one reservoir, right? So you've got one kind of fluid in the whole system. I guess that works (or you wouldn't be posting this) but I realize I don't know why it works. I assume there's a difference between the two kinds of fluid.... or is it just all labelling?

Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid.

The brake/clutch combo Shorts posted about has two master cylinders for two separate systems. Shredding a clutch line doesn't mean your brakes go out and having your brake fluid leak out doesn't make your clutch stop working.
