The Road Not Taken

#1 Unread post by poet »

It has been 25 years since I rode. I always made excuses; I move too much, in a place with bad roads, need to save money ... none of them really good ones.

Now I am in one place have the money (current economy may change that) and I still want to ride.

People thought it was to save money on gas, my car gets 30 MPG & I am 5 miles from work, Or I am having a mid life crisis. even my wife knows this is not it.

I just want to ride.

9/28/08 I passed the MSF course

10/24 bought my bike
10/25 Registered bike and got plates
10/27 Got proof insurance

Milage: 6890

10/31 30 miles
Started riding more because of the weekend, I hate work.
talked to a Motorcycle cop at a stop light. Asked if they rode BMW.
He seemed annoyed and proud ... "No, HARLEY!"
They turn the bike off at stop lights, curious.

11/1 60+ miles
Went down to Jean NV about 25 miles south Hwy. 604.
After making Jean thought I would go to Primm ... Not.
Hwy. 604 south of Jean is a ... rough ... road.
I am still getting back in the saddle, I could have made it but a bumpy and not so fun ride.

I tried to turn around then I realized ... I don't have enough practice turning on this bike.
My only saving grace ... no one was on the road to see my embarrassment, a 3 point U-turn.

But ... the ride was very good, exactly what I was looking for.
I am soo happy.

Slow speed practice tomorrow to get used to my new bike.

11/15/08 60 Miles
Went out to Red Rocks today. I have lived in Las Vegas 15 years and this is only my second trip to Red Rocks. Watched the climbers and thought if I lost 35 Lbs. and 10 years .... I could do that.

Wide view of Red Rocks

... well maybe next year I will climb

VT-27...those planes came from NASCC. They're the T-28 models (for Primary).

Great pics. Makes my legs cramp just looking at those rock climbers!

Just odd seeing them at a ghost town by the Colorado river.
Then again nothing around Las Vegas is surprising

Things I have learned so far, or ...
"Don't do that dummy!"

1. Don't use the front brake while the front wheel is turned in gravel
a. no harm done but lesson learned.

2. Practice in slow turns pays off
a. did it this time without the 3 point turn

3. If it gets colder I will need a liner ... even in Vegas ... mornings is cold
a. can be in the 50's (don't be hatin')

4. Check the gas station air hose BEFORE using it.
a. It had no pin, I ended up losing more air and driving up the street.

Remember
Riding is educational

Been having pain in my right shoulder for a week and a half. I went to my orthopedist and got a shot of cortisone. I thought tendentious he said that and could be a rotator cuff problem.

The upshot I am not going to do a planned 160 mile ride my longest to date.
:frusty:  :frusty:

It is bad enough being a weekend warrior (I use that term generously) but when you are sore ....

If the shoulder is not better next week MRI and ??? ... sigh...

I really do hates the cold. We can't all be mountain men like Gummiente.
My shoulder is better and I needed to test out my over-pants.
http://www.newenough.com/protective_app ... pants.html
They worked great. They are baggy and catch on the gas tank if I am not careful. Switched the gas off with the pants once, oops.
