NOTES:

Slingshot is a three-wheeled motorcycle, not an automobile. It doesn’t have airbags, meet automotive safety standards, and it may handle differently than other vehicles, especially in wet conditions. Always wear helmets, seat belts, and don’t drink and drive. Drivers may need a valid motorcycle endorsement.

Polaris is relentless! New for 2018, the 2018 Polaris Slingshot SLR LE brings 3-wheeled motorcycle action to the streets!

Note: Myself, I call these "Trikes", like Harley-Davidson does, the Slingshot series is actually what they call a "REVERSE trike".

No matter what it's called, a Trike, 3-wheeler or Spyder, is it a motorcycle to you? Is there one you would wave at others you don't?

It would get you out in the wind and looks like more fun than looking out your car windows for sure. A lady at work has one and is getting a roof for it, she is having fun with it. Looks like a car to me. I would think at that price a convertible car would be better. Was going to vote cool but changed my mind, uncool.

OK... there are a number of three (3) wheelers (aka: tricycles) that are currently being marketed as motorcycles, including the T-Rex which is manufactured right there in Canada, but this is by far the most offensive and disturbing of the bunch. It doesn't even have a motorcycle engine, it has an automobile engine. The T-Rex has the BMW 1600 6 cylinder and the Can-Am Spyder, well let's face it is just a snowmobile on wheels, but this monstrosity has a GM 4 cylinder car engine. Add to the fact that very little if anything on this POS resembles a motorcycle the fact that the price is simply insane. I could buy two (2) Cooper Minis (one for each foot) and have a lot more fun. This is very UNCOOL......

Caveat up front, I think these lititle bundles of edgy are awesome for what they are. They look like they'd be insanely fun to tear down the interstate in, I love the looks and I just about lose my mind when I see one out in traffic. There's a local guy who I see all the time on I-15 in his, he wears a Batman mask behind the wheel.
Behind the what? The wheel?
Yep. Steering wheel. And pedals, and a hand-operated shift lever. Whatever else the Slingshot is, it definitely isn't a motorcycle. It's not even close, like the other 3-wheelers that have made an appearance, at least those there's still bars and a saddle. So as cool as the Slingshot might be, here on the TMW Cool Wall, it has to be a Fail. If Polaris wants to sell me a motorcycle, they shouldn't have killed Vic.

I always find it fascinating putting up a Polaris Slingshot and reading the responses!

I assure you, Polaris officially calls the Slingshot a motorcycle, not a car"

"We dare you to ignore it. We dare you to categorize it. We dare you to rationalize it. The Slingshot® open-air roadster – 3 wheel motorcycle. Absurdly powerful. No roof. No doors. No regrets. Choose a model. Throw it in gear. And go. We dare you." - Polaris

Of course, that's up to you if you accept that or not. I completely agree that it is on the "edge" of being a carcycle. I think we can agree, that maybe it's the car engine, but doesn't the Triumph Rocket III almost use a car engine as well? 3-wheels, well, that's a Harley-Davidson Trike... maybe it's the doors and the steering wheel? If it wasn't for the 3-wheels, I'd call this an Ariel Atom!

Image

So, what do I think? Well, I'm biased as I have put it up on Total Motorcycle, I think it is on the side of a motorcycle, but just barely. At least you get out of it a little more "motorcycle" than you would a convertible car.

Would I try one? You bet. For what it is, it is awesome; but I wouldn't pretend it's a motorcycle or a car, it is unique. But I'd like it even more with 4-wheels and a roof though!

Total Motorcycle's Take-a-way: Unique. Different. Controversial. Polaris calls it a 3-wheeled motorcycle, what do you think? Sure, the Slingshot SLR LE is awesome on its own, but start calling it a motorcycle and riders respond! Is it the doors? The steering wheel? Maybe it just looks "too much" like a car, or the GM engine? Take it for what it is, it is a motorcycle-like experience; and that is pretty cool in-itself.
