LOE 1000

#1 Unread post by follow »

Hey All I did the LOE 1000 (IBA in NM) had a blast mapping and having to do the scavenger hunt, earn my points, ride more than 1000 miles and all in 24hrs. Hubby and I took 4th. That was our first rally of this kind.
I follow a new highway I haven't traveled before.

Cute :D I wish it were long on energy by the time we were done we were pooped. LOE stands for Land of Enchantment....AKA: New Mexico. to read up on the ride go to www.loe1000.org they host the long distant rally every year, there is a different one in different states. Next year we will probably go to Minnisota or Nevada. My hubby is so hooked on IBA rides it ain't funny...People are always saying HD riders spend alot on their bikes I don't...he has more farkles on the honda than I do on HD, I guess next on list is a radar detector...any suggestions. (yes we did.oops  )
So much to do and so little vacation time to do it. I might have to post my schedule for next year, it's already filling up....and mostly bike related...imagine that.

There are long distance rallys all over the US. Hubby and I just attended one out of Lynchburg, VA - I think its the last one of the year "out East."

For anyone interested. Basically, its a scavenger hunt by motorcycle. You ride to a chosen location and take a photograph (Polaroid or digital) of the specified thing, be it a plaque, statue, landmark, etc., etc., etc. Some are 24 hours, others are 10 hours, some include both. Some of the 24 hour rallys have start points all over, with the finish in one spot, others start and end at the same location.

You register for the rally and get your rider number - usually a golf towel or laminated card. You carry this with you and it must be included (visible!) in all your photographs. - unless stated otherwise. A 'general' list of bonus locations (and point values) is published about a week in advance so you can start to eyeball your route options. Then closer to the start time, a detailed list is published. This will include some time restrictions for bonii which make once easy points MUCH harder... for instance one location was on a college campus for decent points. It would be on the way to or from many other locations, so it appeared to be an easy pick up. BUT the details then state a time restriction between 9am and 12pm, at the entrance to the football stadium... on a football game day (kickoff at noon). Now that "easy" hit is a LOT more challenging.

You've got to keep very good notes as you ride (ie write your odometer reading at each bonus stop) and make sure you understand WHAT you are supposed to find, as well as what to do if something is closed or otherwise unavailable.

Then, once you've completed your ride, you've got to sit down and "claim" your bonus points. Organize the receipts and things, make sure the information required is included and filled in where it is supposed to be. Bonus points can be lost for lack of the year in a date, for instance.

Generally there are trophies or other recognition for doing well, and the tales of rider's various adventures while hunting a particular bonus are always entertaining.

This one in particular gave out the envelopes the night before at 8pm. gave the stops and points value. you had to map it and figure out what you want to do the night before you did not get a week to study, that is why I stated this is the first of this kind I went to...endurance from the moment they handed the packet and people scattered fast. Some said they were up until 2am mapping and trying to figure out their route to get the best points value. The ride started line up at 6am.
We decided to start with all the hard stops first and take the mountains so we could avoid the critters at night. It wasn't easy getting to some of the stops they were off the main path or down some twisty windy road which cut into your time. At times we were only managing 35mph on mtn. roads. And one stop was at a rasberry farm(only open at a certain time) we had to bring produce back with a receipt. (All gas receipts with detailed info too) You were only aloud one bonus point which none of them were easy to get. I have been to many other rallys but this was a new one for us, it was a great experience. I did feel bad for some I believe only 36 finished, for those who did not finish they either did not make the miles or some other detail disqualified them, like hitting a dear and bikes breaking down.

Thought I saw that
I work just a mile or so from the balloon fiesta park and drive right by it on my way to work so I see all the balloons without having to go on the field. It is amazing to see.
We had some pretty ugly weather that weekend, did you hit any of it?

We sure did, got rained on somewhere around 2-3 am, the rain would just not let up and it got pretty cold, GPS said it was 38'. Boy did I get a chill to my bones. I did have every bit of gear on, glad I had my Joe Rocket Jacket on since it comes down far enough to cover my butt which kept the rain off of me. Rain made it hard to see too. But I new when I was passing your house, told Nick we needed to stop he pretended he couldn't hear me on the intercom...haha. we could of had a coffee break...dang.

P.S. We did get a good picture of the balloon festival sign.
