I'm not at all trying to be confrontational here!!!

I'm torn about getting a tattoo. On the one hand I'd like to do a back piece that symbolizes my family and faith. On the other hand, my faith is somewhat on the "tattoos are no-no's" side of things.

Does anyone here consider themselves Christian, and still have a tattoo? If so, how did you rationalize it? Has your fellowship community looked at you with disdain, or been accepting?

Any input would be nice.....

No one can answer that for you - you need to read what it is some people think is wrong and see if you agree or disagree with it. This article sums up a lot nicely: http://christianteens.about.com/od/advice/f/tattoo.htm

Given that most of the anti-tattoo things seem to be old testament - I don't see the issue.

I don't know that I really consider myself "christian" anymore, though, so take that with a grain of salt.

I consider myself a Christian and have a tattoo. No one in my congregation has ever said anything negative. But, I do belong to a pretty liberal church. Even my grandmother who is Catholic likes it.

In the end, it is really a personal decision and you need to make sure you are 100% sure about it before you have the work done.

Someone I know, a Christian, has a tattoo that says "Galatians 6:17", which translated from the Bible means Let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. He has it surrounded by a cross (of sorts) and above it an arm band of thorny vines. His Dad gives him all kinds of grief about his tattoo, but he decided that it was up to him how to express his love of God, Jesus, faith, etc...

That's the only example I can offer. I, myself, am not a Christian, but I do understand that different branches of the Christian faith have different views on modesty, expression and so on. You are the only one who can interpret your religion and know how it is a priority in your life. To me... my faith is very personal, thus no person can tell me how to or how not to adorn my own body. Tattoos are very personal as well, so make sure you do what's right for you.

Good luck in your decision. Let us know how it goes.

Cheers,
Loonette

One of my friends is a priest and has a wicked tattoo of a panther that looks like it's exploding from his skin on his chest. I would say he's Christian.

I consider myself Christian and intend on getting a tattoo by the end of the year. The way I see it, if other people don't like it, they haven't got the whole "judge not" thing down very well...

Like Loonette, I can only offer what a friend has done. Christian girl with tattoos on both wrists. IIRC, they say "To live, is God. To love, is Christ." Or something like that. One phrase on each wrist. I'd show a pic, but she's one of those girls with 345764356345 pictures on her myspace/facebook and both aren't working well for me right now.

I'm Christian but not active in a congregation. For the most part, I find that the "older folks" look at them with disdain (like my grandmother), the other age groups are split decision.

But, I know a local preacher that has around 10 tattoos with more planned. All of his are religious in nature. His congregation doesn't seem to have any problems with him having them.

Good Luck with your decision.
