You hijacked a thread to yell at a guy for not allowing some idiot to pass him despite the fact that A) he was already speeding, B) he was in the slow lane, and C) he was approaching a traffic light, and you expect what - some Freudian quotes translated into Latin? Perhaps the mule wants to sleep with his mother or something. Feel better now? You've driven a measly 500k miles and so you've become a self-proclaimed drivers' ed teacher destined to educate the rest of us? It would be one thing if Gompers was stick-blocking the other driver and being a jerk, but he did nothing wrong by staying his course. If the crazy donkey in the Caprice had caused an accident by passing in the break-down lane, would you hold Gompers responsible? I'm all for using the passing lane to overtake slower drivers and then returning to the slow lane once safely past, but what you're advocating is going out of your way to make it easier for speeders to navigate around traffic in an effort to "promote safety". Sounds to me like you rode the short bus to driving school.

1) Actually, it was to yell at a guy for ignoring a developing dangerous situation...or, if he didn't ignore it, to let his ego and desire to put someone in their place turn a bad situation worse.

2) One never expects Freud in a discussion of traffic safety... but, once introduced, he must be addressed.... and in case you are wondering, Mules are not known for castration anxiety or phallic fixations.

3) Yes, I've driven well over 500K miles and learned quite a bit in the process... and if someone describes themselves mishandling a dangerous situation I will advise them on better methods.

4) Yes, I am advocating making it easier for other drivers to do what they are going to do anyway. If you make it harder, it raises the risk for everyone and people die. They die all the time within 10 miles of my house because of just this sort of situation with slow-moving vehicles failing to allow faster traffic to pass, causing the aggressive asshats to pass illegally and head-on innocent people... or, in a case last March, take out a kid who was pushing his dirtbike along the shoulder. I drove by the roadside "shrine" (man I hate those...why would people pile PVC crosses along the road like that? shrug...) twice today. If you want to change how other drivers are driving, vote for more law enforcement... vote for more traffic cameras... vote for new traffic laws or representatives that will pass them... don't try to be a passive-aggressive vigilante.

5) I drove, actually.

dieziege, your points are very valid. If anyone has taken any Hazard Avoidance Tactics, they would know what you are talking about.

It's actually quite simple. People just choose to ignore potential hazards in the making. You are on the right track, but you are preaching to people who don't want to hear what you have to say.
I teach driver training here and do refresher training courses for bus drivers. A few of them always come in with attitudes because they think that if they have been a professional driver for umpteen years, that they know it all.
You're wasting your energy on those 2.

How about getting this thread back on track? All that arguing about some stupid incident that took place years ago was pretty tedious and said more about the stubborness of the people arguing than anything else. Who cares what happened? - I don't.

In an attempt to get back on track - some of the worst drivers are young testosterone-filled males riding powerful motorcycles (often down to lack of experience I guess).

A while ago I was riding in the fast lane of the M1 motorway in the English Midlands. I was doing about 80mph and just about to return to the middle lane after overtaking a few cars when out of nowhere another bike shot past me on the inside - he must have been doing about 100mph and was in the same lane as me. If I'd have started to pull into the middle lane we'd have collided and that could have been pretty messy at those sort of speeds.

80 mph that to the old fellers is worst driving oh wait the guy going 100 mph was the worsterest driver. I don't want to comment on the old people taking test every 3 weeks cuz well you know why. We are all going in that direction it is not that far away. I hope to ride a 3 wheelie at that age. A lot of times all you have to do is look in the mirrow and see one of the bad drivers. I have pulled some pieces of stupid from time to time.

Hi guys. My vote for worst drivers would go to those old folks who only take their cars out on a Sunday. The old fellas are usually well over 80, wear hats and have bad all round judgement and supreme lack of awareness. The old girls just lack any kind of awareness - one of them stopped in the middle of the road in front of me the other day to have a chat withe her passenger (she probably couldn't cope with driving and talking at the same time), completely unaware there was any traffic behind her. These old folks should have to take a driving test every 3 weeks after the age of 70.

The worst bit of driving I've ever experienced was by courtesy of another biker - I was doing about 80mph in the fast lane of the M1 motorway, driving north in the English Midlands. I'd just overtaken a few cars and was about to move back into the central lane when out of nowhere a bike shot past me on the inside in the same lane as me - there must have been about three feet between us. In my experience bikers make up some of the best and the worst drivers on the road - and the younger they are the worse they tend to be.

I've done stupid things too from time to time, but that guy and his high speed undertaking was pretty scary. As for the old folks, most are OK drivers but there are some who really shouldn't be driving because of slow reactions and lack of awareness - not their fault, just things that can come with age, but when you combine that with driving it can mean danger for all sorts of innocent people on the road.
