Starting motor grinds!

#1 Unread post by rdhussey »

Hi, I have a 1982 kawasaki kz750. The starter spins free 80% of the time and barely completes one compression the other 20%. I replaced the motor with a spare with only a slight change in the noise.

Could a starter problem be the cause or is it likely an internal gear?

Sounds like it's an internal gear, since you've already tried swapping the starter... Some bikes allow access to the starter clutch and gears simply by removing a side cover. Hope this is the case for you :(
