I need an Engine

Not exactly an answer to your question, but what kind of gearboxes are run in those? Is it a special tranny plate that you use or what?

This class of car is the Formula 500, in stock form they use a 500cc rotax and snowmobile variable drive to a live axle, If I build this thing it will use the bikes 6 speed. which leads me to another question.

I have heard that the trannys on these bikes can shift under full power without the clutch with just an spark kill during the shift, How true is this?

I would love to set it up with paddle shifters and only use the clutch for starting off the line.

Sorry but yet another question; how do you mate the bike's 6 speed to a live rear axle? I used to watch the "Legend" cars run at a track near here and they used motorcycle engines with live rear axles too but never knew how they connect the 2.

I had a friend who had a motorcycle engine in a red suzuki hatchback something or other. I don't talk to him much since I graduated so I don't think I'll ever find out what kind of engine it was.

Was it fast? Was it slow? Did it run at all?

My truck (3.0 litre v6 Mazda b3000) outran it easily and it had a very highpitched annoying sound, but that may have been my friend yelling something (think Prof. Frink from the Simpsons).

no problem, answering the questions can make me think about the project from a different perspective.

The car is chain drive to the live axle.

In stock form the engine drives the clutch/constant velocity transmission by belt which drives a jack shaft and the jack shaft drives the axle by chain.

I'm not sure yet how I will do it, I may need the jack shaft to get the gearing low enough, it only has 19" tires so I can't run to big of sprocket.

+1 for getting a hayabusa motor. They are the most common of the uber high power sportbikes and have tons of performance parts available.

IIRC there is a formula racing series just for hayabusa powered cars.

another possibility but a very expensive one is the motor from a BMW K1200S, this bike is pretty close to the hayabusa in power and performance, but has shaft drive

easiest solution would be the busa motor, there are already quite a few formula type cars out there running busa motors.

not a modern engine to say the least, but people seem to use fj1200 engines for "Legends" series cars all the time. What a "legends" series car is i have no idea...
