2-stroke, no oil?

I just bought a 1977 Yamaha RD400, bikez.com says it is a 2-stroke, but do i or do i not have to mix oil with the gas?

There is a small tank under the seat area for 2-stroke injection oil. Keep it full and the bike should pump itself what it needs.

back then, do you know if it takes leaded or unleaded? and where can I get 2-sroke injection oil?

I would have to say it's leaded gas. My 1980 yamaha XS400 runs on leaded BUT, I have heard that over time the valve seats harden enough to run unleaded gas without problems. I have been running unleaded in mine and it's been fine.

you aint got to worry about valve seats as the rd400 dont have any valves.
yamaha sells a 2 stroke oil that dont smoke quite as bad as some.if you cant get that 30w oil will work.

can you even get leaded fuel anymore? So wht would happen if you run unleaded in an older bike designed for leaded fuel?

The lead in the fuel acted as a lubricant and prevented detonation. Older bikes which require lead usually have softer valve seats (among other things.) Running unleaded in an older bike like that would cause the valve seats to deform over time, since they don't have a lead cushion. You can, however, buy a lead substitute from the auto parts store to pour in a tank of gas.

Cool Fact #1 - The guy who invented leaded fuel also invented CFC's (for spray cans)

Cool Fact #2 - Humans in Industrialized nations still have over 600 times the natural amount of lead in their bodies from vehicles running leaded fuel (Even though it's been banned for almost 30 years, the lead is still floating around out there, and you're breathing it in!!)
