That is Corporate Asscovering Lawyer-speak. All good "O Ring" chains use Viton or similar for the "Donut Holes", and it's as chemically impervious as you'll find this side of the space program. By 'safe' I meant non-explosive, non-hallucination-inducing, non-will-eat-a-hole-to-china-if-spilled stuff. Both kerosene and WD mentioned above are good. So is varsol or diesel fuel..... pick your poison.

If in doubt.... lube it. You can't overlube a chain, the worst that will happen is flying mung off the chain for a few miles.
