Street-legal ATV

A representative from BMW drove/rode one of these to our riding club meeting last night. The legislative steps are in progress to make these street legal, and for the moment he has a permit to ride it on the street. It was very cool, although in my mind no way was it worth the $50,000 MSRP.

He said they are currently making only 2 a week, although plans to increase output are in the works. Don’t be surprised to see one in the near future!

It's definately BMW-style to the core though. Big storage on the sides, heated grips, the works.

4 wheels? Next thing you know they'll be putting full bodies on them that you have to sit in!

Maybe they'll put seatbelts on them because too many people were running into things and flying off the back, then make them mandatory to wear?

Then they'll probably call it an "automobile". What is the world coming to???

Look's like fun to ride/drive. Not willing to pay that kind of coin for it though.

Yeah, it is pricy. It's got the structural design of an ATV but supposedly rides more like a motorcycle. 6 speed manual gearbox, a motor of a BMW bike, etc. He hopped on it for just a second (since most of us didn't even see him pull in) and it moves pretty well. Easy to do powerslides on (not that you'd want to do that in the street) but how long till we see these things on the race track? Kinda funny though, he hopped on, reversed (yeah, it does have a reverse gear) put it into 1st...and stalled. Mwahaha...I laughed, he chuckled...

I'd probably have taken one of our member's Ducati 996 over it, but it was pretty sweet!

Street legality is going to vary by state. In many states, you can already license ATVs for the street, as long as they have the basic safety equipment (lights, mirrors, etc...). In many western states, licensed ATVs on public streets are a normal sight. I know of street legal ATVs operating in NY, PA and AZ. I've seen 'em in many other states.

On the flip side, other states expressly forbid licensing of ATV for the street. CA and WA are among these.

some of the towns around my area have Bylaws allowing ATVs on the street...you have to wearing a helmet and theres a speed limit of some sort....

Some of them are legal here and some arent. Depending on if its passed some sort of Government testing.

Amusingly you need a car licence to operate, unlike the trike which can be oeprated on either a car or Bike licence. Helmets are not required for either by law.
