No License Motorcycle - New York?

  • Quote

#1 Post by clex » Wed Jun 21, 2006 10:37 am

So recently I seen an ad while looking for a moped and found what appeared to be a yamaha motorcycle, no license holder or anything, had about 6k miles on it, does 140mph, and the owner told me it was a moped bike, was fully street legal, 16 to ride, no license required.. im a bit lost, what makes this legal? by moped, i want a moped that has that motorcycle look, or slight dirt bike look, i cant stand those moped scooter things with seats for some reason, and i need something to practice before moving to the next level.

figured you guys here could help me with this? what gets classified as what, thanks.

Mopeds are typically automatics. They don't have gears that the driver shifts manually persay. And 140mph? I don't believe it. What's the make and model of this so called "moped" ?

Exactly my point, when he said 140 I was like, wait.. I don't know, had the money in hand maybe he was just eager to get rid of it.

it was a blue and white 2000 yamaha yzf-r1

If the story went down as you said, someone was trying to sell you a 1-liter very high performance motorcycle as though it was a scooter. Which means it was probably stolen and he didn't want you trying to register it too soon.

well the wierd thing is, 3 days after the incident, I went to go back to the ad to have another look at the details and the picture, and it said it was removed not by the poster, but craigslist staff, but I didn't really think nothing of it. I have the persons email, should I report it or something?

It's definetely a good thing you took the time to ask. Otherwise you would own a very powerful 1 liter "Moped."

I'd highly recommend that you check out NY state law regarding mopeds. They are all required to be registered and they all require at least a drivers license to operate on the street. NY classifies mopeds (actually called "limited use motorcycles") by their top speed. Anything over 30 mph requires a motorcycle license. Below 30 mph requires a regular drivers license. Check this link for details before you part with your cash :
