All we ride are Ninjas and Harleys...

I was asked the other day what kind of bike I ride. After the model didn't register, I replied that it's a

"Big ol' cruiser".

"Oh, a Harley!"

"Nah, it's a Honda, (jokingly) Harleys are a bit out of my price range."

...blank stare...

"Yeah, it's kinda like a Harley."

understanding returns!

"You get a lot of chics from that thing?"

"Haha, actually not as many as you'd think. The ladies around here seem to be more into the crotch rocket types unfortunately."

..blank stare again...

"Ya know, sport bikes, race style bikes."

...blank stare...

Then I sigh on the inside before I say it

"Ninja."

Understanding returns.

Doh!
It isn't really their fault though, I mean I don't know car names when someone tells me what they drive, but it's just funny to have a conversation about bikes with a non-rider because it always ends up the same.

Hahaha, yeah that pretty much sums it up. An old buddy came over for the first time in months and he hadn't heard I had started riding. I unveiled my bike and he leaned down to take a look at the engine and he asked, "Is that a Harley?!" Even though the big honda wing on the tank was staring him in the eye.

What really confused people is when you ride a bike that doesn't fit into either category. Sports Tourer or Touring bike don't register most the time. I have a hard time accepting it when people call my BMW a crotch rocket. "No, not really..."

I'm forever labled as "crotch rocket" rider by anyone who is uneducated about bikes. They say "My cousin was killed on a crotch rocket, be careful". Or "those things are too fast, I'll ride a Harley". But I have rarely found bike guys who don't understand the difference. I have on rare occasion found a woman who will make a (snide) comment about my bike, but as I recall both times I can think of it was a pillion that made the comment, and it was something along the lines of "hey, this ain't the Honda hoot" or something silly like that. It does go to show you that the majority (who don't ride) have some crazy ideas. In our local paper a guy suggested they ban bikes in our town because we all have loud pipes and should not be welcome in town. I'd be surprised if he could even hear my bike go by, but he would say, we also don't need wheelie jockeys and racer boys in town. They find a way to lump us together when they are annoyed by a few noisy or bad behaving riders. We should all keep in mind that what we do effects our brothers and sisters in the saddle.

in fact just last night someone said my Fj1200 looked like a Ninja, and then asked if I lay on the tank.

Uhmmm, no.

Haha, I get that all the time.

"What kind of bike do you have?"

"Honda 599"

*blank stare*

"You know those race bikes?"

*hint of understanding*

"The ones with all the plastic wrapped around the front?"

*ding*

"It's like that without all the plastic"

"You ride a crotch rocket"

"No"
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
