i dont understand people who ride sportbikes and question why some people like to ride them fast. anyone who has a pulse can explain the appeal of riding fast. this place is conservative beyond anything ive ever seen, a lot of you belong in minivans.

its one thing to go full throttle in traffic, in front of a school, or in a heavily populated area. however, if you're on a straight, why not?

Dont get me wrong. I have gone fast. But there is a differenct between doing that and doing it when there are other people on the road. This guy was going well over 100 MPH on a surface street. I did not mention this but he had to pass a minivan on a double yellow to keep from hitting them after his stunt. I am trying to get to the point that i dont agree with that. I only go fast when there is nobody on the road. And it is rare that I do because I am just starting out.

I've ridden with some crazies before but was smart enough not to take the risks they did.

I saw some really wild stuff and always told them I had my GPS and cell phone to call in the rescue.

No matter what's going on around you ride within your limits....

there is a difference between a spirited bit of canyon carving and being a total suicidal jackass.

I do like to hit the canyons and will admit that I tend to be riding a lot faster than I would be just running around town. However, even in the canyons I never go beyond my limits and always make sure I have enough left to get out of a bad situation (i.e. someone drifting into my lane, debris in the road, critter crossing the road).

I have had plenty of situations in the canyons that had I been going at 10/10ths I would have been in serious trouble. Have had many instances of coming around a blind turn to find gravel all over the place.

On my last canyon ride I had to grab a handful of brakes right before going into a turn because right as I was setting up for the turn I saw a deer getting ready to run across the road. Had I just thrown the bike into the turn I could very well have hit a deer mid-turn.

That story is why the critical skills of braking before entering a curve and learning to bring the bike up in a turn and stop is taught in the MSF Basic riding course.

Even curves that you ride regularly change all the time. The ones I recently found were gravel free when I first rode them and then had sections covered with gravel after the last rain storm. Big surprise coming around the first one and seeing all the stones....

If you really want to ride the curves hard, do a test run first and turn around and ride it again. The roads are long and straight most of the time and we spend so little time enjoying those rare beautiful stretches of twistys we happen upon.

IRT #1

so was the guy wearing a helmet or jacket or anything? Really a squid is not necessarily someone who stunts a sportbike. A squid is someone who rides with shorts and flipflops while riding whether on a crotch rocket or cruiser.

nah, you can still be a squid w/ full leathers.

the squid lifestyle isn't just about what your wear, it's more about the attitude.

a lot of people here see me as a squid.

do i consider myself a squid? i don't ride within the speed limit but that's about it. im not into stunting... yet.
