Just bought my 2006 Dyna -- Already have a question

Hello fellow riders. I took delivery of my new Dyna last week and noticed that when I hold the front brake and load-up the front shocks, a very subtle clanking-type feel (no noise) is present when travelling up and down.

The head-mechanic said this is normal -- call me paranoid but I just paid alot of money for this bike and would like to be sure based on your unbiased views.

have a different mechanic check out the play in the stem bearings. HDs are known to sometimes get a little loose in the steering head.

Doesn't sound quite right to me. Are you sure it isn't the front brake shoe? There should be a little bit of wiggle room, usually taken up by a spring tensioner, and perhaps since you're holding the front brake when the problem occurs that's what you're hearing. If not then, yeah, I'd be concerned about the bearing in the steering stem or something loose in the forks.

Have you Googled it and found the issue in a Harley forum?

It's tough to paint a picture of this , but it is not quite a noise and it does not originate from the stem of the forks. It feels like a very light floating-like thump and it is definitely originating from the motion of the travel, but it is not a loose type of mechanism.

If I had to picture it -- it would be something like a loose cylinder like object floating in the oil (do they even employ oil as the dampening method?) of the shock, and it travels slower then the motion but provides enough of a feeling when it stops moving -- as I write this I'm really concerned about what readers are going to think -- this guy has a serious case of paranoia.

I guess if I saw a mechanical/parts diagram of the shocks, I would probably be able make a better reference

Find a HD forum and ask there... also call a different shop and ask to talk to a tech there. Maybe go to a HD shop, sit on one of the same bikes there and see if it does the same thing.

I have an '06 Superglide with over 10,000km on it now and haven't experienced what you've described. I suspect your head mechanic might be wrong on this one, but there are several Harley forums where you can ask this question and get a more specific answer:
