where do you put your helmet
If i'm out for short trips, i'll lock it up on the helmet lock which sits right under the seat.
I usually take it inside with me when I go to work because I don't feel comfortable leaving it out in the hot sun all day long.
At home, it sits next to my desk until I take it out again.

Out: It's usually with me.
Home: On the floor out of the way beside the keys, registration/insurance docs, gloves and sunglasses.

I opt for the ZEN answer: it's not where it IS, but where I make sure it ISN'T:
I keep it away from things that might damage it:
1. gas fumes, so I NEVER, EVER put it on the gas tank; ever see what gas does to a styrofoam cup? That same styrofoam is in your DOT-approved helmet...
2. away from falling objects, so I keep my collection of all 5 helmets on a shelf at home; Now I have to admit, an earthquake MIGHT get me on this one, but I live on the East Coast... one 3.5 tremble in 36 years of living here leaves me feeling OK with this risk.
3. when out riding, in such a place it cannot fall to the ground and become compromised for impact protection, so I keep it in a saddlebag or secured on the helmet lock, provided that location is nowhere near HOT PARTS of the bike.

I place it on one of my mirrors, with the chin guard facing downhill and towards the center of the bike. They say this can dent the styrofoam, and I am sure its not good for it but I am gentle with the way I place it there. And the chin guard it supporting part of the weight of the helmet.
Most of the time, it goes with me though.
At home, on the floor somewhere with jacket and gloves.
