Progressive is in the motorcycle insurance business. They are a major player. Watch Speed Channel some night and see how many commercials they have. They will also do rate comparisons for you and tell you if they are the lowest or not.

Major Plus is that if you ever need to make a claim...THEY PAY IT..they don't jerk you around like some of the other insurance companies when it comes time to pay up. Nothing worse than having your ride stolen or dropped and having to argue and fight about getting reimbursed.

Wouldn't cancel them out withour checking a rate first.

So all of you that are saying using a parent for insurance is bad:

When you were under 25 did you bend over and take it, or did you cheat your way through?

Better yet did you even carry insurance?

Mine was never very expensive. I ponied up with the lowest rate I could find while not outright lying to the insurance company.

As a matter of fact I did have insurance, the ethical way. You know how you avoid bending over and taking it? You buy used! You don't buy a 12k motorcycle or a 25k car. You don't finance, you don't get full coverage, you don't eat lobster and steak at every meal and you don't become CEO president of NBC with a 150k/yr salary right out of college.

Hey, if you're parents are rich and they want to pay for you..great, otherwise buckle down and get what you can afford. This comment is not directed at anyone and not meant to offend, but where did this spoiled sense of entitlement come from?

My opinion on this is the insurance company tries any way possible to take your money and keep it. If I can find ways to keep my money from them, I will probably do it. Same goes for taxes. Use any tax deductions you can.

Fair enough...just don't complain if they turn around and do everything they can to not pay YOU when the time comes.

But most insurance companies already do that anyway. Also, they will never crack down on this promary driver stuff. I also don't like how insurance companies say they lose money and try to paint themselves as the victims. Not all insurance company people are bad, but the company executives try to make as much as they can, which means they have to screw people in the process.

I ride an older Seca II (yamaha XJ600s). Not the nicest, or fastest bike but I can afford it. I am 19 and I pay $256/year. I did this through Progressive Direct (the online version of progressive). I got a statement in the mail yesterday saying that my premium was going to be increased by $140 due to new information that was given to Progressive by the MVA. I have no traffic violations, so when I got this I was like, "WHAT THE F*&K!." I called them up and the girl said that when I put in XJ600S, their system recognized that bike as a "dirt bike." And when the VIN number came from the MVA, they realized that it wasn't a dirt bike. So they increased my premium. I didn't stand for it and told her that I was lied to and cheated by their false system. After complaining for a half hour, she talked to her manager and gave me a "courtesy rate" of $256/year. So if you are ever getting shat on by an insurance company, call them up and tell them to fix the problem, or you will go get the rate you want somewhere else. They most likely won't want to lose a paying customer.

Basically, insurance companies will try to squeeze money out of you any way they can. Try your best to not let them.

Oh, so now living a responsible life is "bending over and taking it?" That's crazy. When I was 16 I bought my own vehicle and paid for my insurance. It wasn't a new vehicle, but I bought what I could afford. Now, teenagers want the NEW everything because they want to live an MTV life or whatever, and act like their parents owe it to them. Give me a break. Pay for your own way like the rest of us have had to. It builds integrity and makes you an honest, decent person.

Sure there are lots of teenagers whose parents will even treat them to something like a motorcycle with full insurance. Good for them - perhaps their life lessons will have to come further down the road, if they learn any lessons at all. But in general, if you can't afford it, then maybe you shouldn't do it. There's a lot more respect for someone who can take care of their own life and know what their limits are, than for someone who has a pretty new bike.

And it appears that the original poster isn't even responding? Hmmm.

Cheers,
Loonette

Just because they are popular doesn't mean they are good or inexpensive. Progressive not only wanted about six times as much for insurance on my current bike as State Farm, but made no mention of SF being cheaper. I've also heard some horror stories about Progressive not paying up without a fight, but I've also heard more stories of them shelling out the money super-quick. Probably a crapshoot, like most insurance companies.
