I commute in Socal everyday...it does help {me at least} as far as encountering new situations on my bike. If its not a stupid driver, then its a dead animal in the road, or a ladder on the freeway....irregardless...its always a fun challenging ride that helps me better prepare for situations like these that occur. Sure its not like riding the Ortega's or anything like that, but you are forced to take the term "defensive driving" on a new level.

Glad to hear you are ok on your incident up there...you ridin this weekend?

arrrgh i hate being defensive... that's why i don't like night riding. it forces me to be defensive bec of the reduced visibility.

and yeah, ridin on a weekend is an "always" to me. it's pretty much when i get to have real fun w/ my bike.

i don't have any plans yet... do you wanna go riding?

ortega is 80miles away from me and last time i was there, it sucked bec there was too many cagers that slowed me down. i met VP, a fellow TMW member, though so that was cool.

if it's just one cager, i can pick my spot to pass. but it's hard to pass when they get bunched up.

where are you planning to ride?

I do my long rides on Sunday usually....in the morning. yeah, I think the Ortega's are still doing their stupid detour work so its been hectic. If Ortega is 80 miles from you then we can probably do something closer to you. I got a few buddies that would probably like to go too (two R1's and a 600RR}. Let me know what you got and I'll give them a call.

cool!

we could hit ACH. mostly sweepers, great for fast bikes but more traffic.

or we could hit my homecourt, sand canyon. more technical but traffic is considerably low.

or we could hit both. :D

even if we ride here, i don't want to lead since i might just slow you guys down.

Alright, maybe you can help me out in getting this... I understand that you were going too fast, and downhill and such... but what is the big deal about the gravel?

I've ridden on sand with my VFR (not really my first choice, but it happened... hehe), and I didn't have any problems keeping it up. Were you turning or something? Or just locked up the front wheel and because it was downhill it dug in or something?? I'm kind of missing how the bike just dove down.. Every time I have locked up my tires, I've kept it upright.

How fast were you going exactly?

this gravel patch was nasty.

tires didn't lock up.

like i said, i was expecting a little slide but nope, i just lost traction instantly as if i was suddenly on ice.

dunno how fast im going but it's definitely parking lot speed. maybe around 10-15mph i dunno for sure.

again, my mistake... im not blaming the gravel.

ok, got some tips regarding my form...

it seems that my head is not aligned w/ my butt. which means i wasn't applying the "kiss the mirrors" technique quite right. i need to move my upper body away from the tank and lean it into the turn more.

so next time i ride... i'll work on my elbows and upper body a little more.

You can always blame the gravel. Like unwanted relatives they appear at the most inoppertune time. :P

Hey Verm, doing some catching up here. Sorry to hear what happened but at least you are alright. You have a very positive outlook on things. Stay safe.

thanks.

yeah, im glad i wasn't hurt.

christian, the guy i rode w/ ...just got back to the saddle. when he dropped his bike... his pegs pierced his feet, hit and broke his bone.

he was out for 2 months and now, he can ride but he's far from 100%. he can't really put too much pressure on his feet, and that's important in riding. he said he'll undergo phys therapy sometime next month and his expected full recovery is pretty vague. doc said between 6 months - 1½ year.
