I just went out and bought these earbuds with clips, so they don't fall of when I put my helmet on. So the answer is all the time. I think it should vary person to person, depending on how the music affects you. It doesn't distract me, it actually helps me concentrate. If I don't have the ipod going, then I am singing in my helmet the entire way. I can get pretty tired of hearing myself sing, so I try to remember the ipod .

I use a speaker on the right side of my full face to give me signal from my radio, cellphone or passenger/other bike radio. I generally don't listen to it in the city because I want to be extra aware (DC traffic isn't nice even when you're 100% on your toes), but if I'm in an area where I'm cruising for a bit (highway/interstate_ or in stop and go traffic I listen to it- but be forewarned that people can hear you singing
