How much did you spend for your first motorcycle?

#1 Unread post by Magnum »

I am thinking I will spend no more than $2000 on a sporty on-road motorcycle. If I like the sport, then I will spend much more on my second one.

How much did everyone spend on their first motorcycle, and was it a good buy?

I spent $500 to purchase my first bike... a 1980 Suzuki GS250. Then I had to put $150 into it to pass inspection. It was ugly, but it ran and got me thru the learning curve.

You can't forget the expense of riding gear... plan to spend between $700 - $1100 on protective gear.

$700 on the bike (it was a beater :D ) and about $300-400 on gear, and then some for constant repairs. Definitely look around the $1500 to $2000 range, you'll save money in the long run.

$3900 US. It's a 1999 Triumph. Got it for probably $1300-1500 less than real value due to some engine issues (see the continuing saga in the Trouble shooting forum). Could have gotten smaller and cheaper, but it's a freeway commuter (1500 miles in the last 3 weeks) and it made the wife feel better being on something solid with some heft.

And if momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.

My first bike cost £2,000. I spent another £1,500 or so on the gear.
Happy with the bike and the protective gear.

I spent $3,000 on my first bike, which is probably more than 'the bike' was worth, but the owner had just installed a windshield, new/nicer exhaust & mufflers, and some other minor extras, so I wasn't too worried about it.

Also spent $200 or so on any gear I didn't already own (had boots, heavy leather jacket)

$3900 - 2000 CBR600 F4 - Love the bike and am into my second season with it. Man what a ride! I'm starting to feel much more comfortable with it.
