As most people know, the three things which have the most affect on motorcycle insurance rates are (1) age of the rider, (2) type of cycle, 250 cc cruiser vs 1300cc Suzuki Hayabusa sport bike, and (3) location of the insured cycle (a small rural community vs. densely populated inner-city).
Rates DO vary a lot from company to company. Most automobile insurance companies do NOT want our cycle insurance business, even refusing to quote on it. Some others take the approach, "Yeah, we sell cycle insurance, but only at our sky-high rates". Shop around, and buy ONLY the insurance you really need. IF you own your cycle outright (no financing institution involved), my advice is usually to buy only liability insurance. IF your cycle is financed, you have no choice in the matter. Full coverage is almost automatic to get financing approved.
IF you are 18, ride a Hayabusa, AND have your cycle financed by your local bank or credit union, it is gonna take an armored truck-load of money EVERY MONTH to pay your insurance premium.

I keep full coverage on all of my vehicle because I am a student and couldn't afford to replace them if A deer hit me, which they do, hit people. Also, other people drive like "poo poo" around here.
I use State Farm, auto, motorcycle, and renter's insurance. Multiline discount, no accidents.
