Insurance chose the bike for me.

honda shadow $170 year
ninja 650R $680 year

I went with the shadow.

Maybe my rates will go down after I've had my mc license for a year.

I started to ride in the late 60's when the big division firstly was street versus off road.
Street bikes were generally situp bikes becoming known as UJMs which you could add aftermarket items to for the purposes of touring to cafe style riding.
Off road was generally a choice of trail or MX.

I learned on a very small street bike, a Honda S90 and quickly moved up to 250, 350 then some 'killer' 2 stroke bikes of the times( Kaw 500 and 750 tripples).
As my experiences were mostly on 'situp' bikes and I felt more comfortable on them than a 750GPZ and RZ350 I owned, I never drifted toward the more focused sport bikes now available.
My 1200 Bandit is as about as radical a seating position as I want, and even then I prefer to knock around afternoons on an old 920RH Yamaha just from a comfort angle, for me that is.
I've never owned a cruiser. I like the footpegs directly under butt. No way to stand up on a cruiser or load weight on the pegs. As a one time dirt rider, that seems a detraction, even on the street.

So, it's mostly what you're comfortable on and feel most relaxed riding while maintaining control.

Sadly, for me, the motorcycle market has moved away from the UJM configuration of the 70's and 80's .
I grew up with 'standards' and just feel more comfortable on them.
