Biker Etiquette

#1 Unread post by Ray »

I was out riding today, noticed that when other bikers wave, they do it from below the handlebars... is there a reason for that???

So the wind doesn't catch your hand and throw you off balance.

I've read on the boards that it sometimes a regional thing too. Everyone around hear does the "peace sign" below the handle bar wave so I return in kind.

We nod or use a little finger wave from the throttle hand.

Hehehe

I usually just throw the peace sign, OR the rock sign/hook 'em horns... whatever you wanna call it... Ive heard some people even call it the Devils sign... who knows... I'm thinking about carrying around a giant foam finger and pointing it towards my bum! Gotta make sure they know you are riding!

Mostly I nod. In France, bikers stick their leg out in greeting as they pass you - which kind of confused me at first. :?

Hrmmm, never noticed that before. Next time we ride together I'll have to look in my mirrors when we pass some other riders to see this glorious salute to fellow riders.
A dog had his chain reduced one link at a time, every few days, until his chain was so short he could barely move. He never resisted because he was conditioned to the loss of his freedom slowly, over time. Are we in this country becoming like the dog?

Mostly nod, however if I am acknowleding someone allowing me to pass them I do a low wave with my left hand just after I've passed them to say thank you.

The Devils horns is just another opression of "paganism" by the Chrisitan Church. Prior to the invasion of Chrisitanity 'the horns' as you refered to them symbolised variations of fertility and the Green man across many of the 'pagan faiths' in Europe.

Sadly Chrisitan Church propaganda has said that the Green man is the same as the devil. From there 'the horns' got picked up by rock groups trying to underline their rebellion against the Conservative Chrisitan values their parents held.

In the decades since Metal fans and extreme Metal fans in particular have come to use the horns as a sign of appreciation, again underlingin their rebelion against 'normal' society.
