hehe... im not strong too. i dropped my when i tired to remove the rear stand on my own.
anyway... i have no experience w/ centerstands. i assume the GL 1100 is almost 600lbs. if you can't do it alone then ask for assitance.
i know i will never attempt to use the rear and front stands on my own again.

Yeah, I was nervous as hell about putting my bike on the centerstand the first time. The best way I've been able to do it is put the bike on the kickstand, get off the bike, go to the rear of the bike, push down the centerstand with your food till one leg touches ground then simultaneously push down a bit more while using your hand to straighten up the bike. You should now have the bike upright and both legs of the center stand firmly against the ground, holding the bike in said upright position. From here its just a matter of lifting a bit with your arm and pushing down with your foot to pop the sucker up on the stand...
Good luck. Its a little scary at first.

When I use my centre stand, the best method I have found is to stand on the left of the bike and hold it upright with your left hand on the left bar and your right hand on the passenger footpeg hanger (or somewhere on the tail you can grip easily). Push down on the centre stand hard with your right foot and simultaneously pull the bike up and back.

I sold a 250lb weight lifer my Suzuki vx800 - He couldn't get it on the center stand either until he practiced a few times. Don't give up, it's all in the technique - just practice.

I had a hard time with my Yamaha Majesty and the center stand at first. I'm 300 lbs, and that thing would not budge. Then I found the trick to that bike anyway is to make sure that both feet of the center stand are planted firmly on the ground. After that, it just jumped on the stand.

Step on the stand with your right foot, and push the bike into a vertical position using the stand to assist you.
Then rather then pulling it back or to either side, lift straight up as hard as you can. The stand wants to spring into place and you lifting up will help it do so.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
