That's the homepage address for the Motorcycle Accident In Depth Study which is a fairly comprehensive study of mc crashes in Europe done between 1999-2000.

There are many similarities to crashes in North America so it makes for interesting reading.

Training here is not optional, neither is the wearing of helmets come to that however I was reading some research that suggested most FATALITIES happen to weekend warriors wearing full gear out on quiet roads in good weather with no other vehicle involved.

I'll have a hunt round and dig out the article, I believe it was in "Bike".

You are most likely to injure yourself in your first season and no amount of gear can protect you in the worst crashes. Some have suggested that wearing full protective gear, including helmets gives riders a false sense of security. No gear gives you no security and even the best riders occasionally fall off so not wearing protective gear is foolhardy.

Take a training course, wear appropriate gear and ride within your limits.
