help with 1975 cb200t wiring problem?

#1 Unread post by 13013 »

hey all, i'm new to the forum and new to motorcycles... double yay. anyway, i bought a used 1975 honda cb200t recently, and it runs great, but it's got a few quirks... the ignition is gone, so the previous owner wired in an on/off toggle switch from the ignition harness. it uses only two wires, i believe, to operate. the problem is, the starter button doesn't operate, the brake light doesn't come on, and the turn signal lights don't flash (they just stay on solid when put into left or right position) when the toggle switch is in the on position the headlight and tail light come on automatically. my question is, are these problems related to the ignition being wired incorrectly(ie. the remaining 3-4 wires hanging loose unused,) and does anybody have any suggestions as to what would be causing these problems otherwise? thanks in advance!

When someone has bodged the ignition harness you can expect all sorts of probs…anyhow.

Have you checked your brake light bulb element? Also there are switches to activate the brake light, they could have failed.

Your indicators may well be malfunctioning because of a failed indicator relay or dirty/poor wire connections.

When in the on position, your headlight and tail light will be working automatically, as in most jurisdictions, I believe, it is a legal requirement. Being an older bike this feature could possibly have been wired in at a later date.

I imagine you must be kick starting it. If that works for you just ignore the electric start.

thanks pongo. i haven't taken the brake light cover off yet, i'm waiting on a replacement bulb (assuming it's burnt) i have a new ignition on order and i'm hoping that when i replace the switch on there some of these problems will go away... is there a relay for each signal, or just one? again, thanks for the reply...

Just one relay. As you can see in logitech104's diagram 'Winker relay'.

well s#!t howdy! i put in a new key switch and all the wiring problems resolved themselves... starter works great too! only problem is that the reason the brake light was having problems, i figured out, is that it's always on, this is due to the fact that the front lever mount bracket is broken at the mirror mount, so theres nothing to compress the contact switch up there.. i really need to find the electric starter switch for this thing... it's been discontinued, and the mount comes directly out of it...

Find the local Japanese bike salvage yard. Find a switch unit that fits your handlebars and has the switchs you want or need. Modify and adapt is how you get and keep old bikes running.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.
