Bike for long legs

#1 Unread post by Coastiecb »

I want to make my first bike purchase this spring. I am just leaving myself some time to research every possible choice. I am looking for a bike I can just cruise on, like a shadow or v-star, etc... However, I am having a problem finding a bike that is confortable for my long legs. I am 6'3 and it is mostly from the waist down. most bikes I have ridden have been confortable on my arms but my knees feel they are higher than they should be. Any suggestions?

Pick out the bike you want and add $450.00 to the price for forward controls. Most cruisers can be made to fit your inseam if you have the cash.

There are also kits for the vstar that will move the existing controls forward, and tilt them back slightly.. they run about 60-80 bucks and work very well...(I have a 34" inseam)

Many bikes fit very well for taller riders. The Kaw Nomad 1600 has an American riding position (sit up) and the bars are wide and short. Many bikes come with forward controls including HD, Kaw 2000. Suzuki and Yamaha are traditionally built for the average rider. Almost all of the Touring V-twins are longer and use the American riding position.

My suggestion, Go to every dealer you can (not in one day) and sit on the bike. When the sales persons approaches ask them to hold the bike up while you check it for fit and riding position. They should, with no hesitation, straddle the front wheel and hold the handle bars.

And... when it comes time to buy and you have selected that one bike, go to your local bank or credit union and get a pre-approval for a loan up to 3K more than you're planning on spending. Now go back to the dealer with the best price and talk OUT THE DOOR, CASH! When he has made the final offer shake your head and tell them you'll think about it. Wait and hour and call back, make them a reasonable offer below their final. Don't hold on the phone. Giver them your number, let them know you can come in today to sign the paperwork. Smile and relax the entire time. After all you have a game plan, they have a bottom line.
