Leather jacket grains?

What's with the grains? Most I see are 1.1 mm- 1.4 mm, with the majority just saying '1.2 - 1.4 mm'.

Do you want a higher or lower number? I would think a lower because you'd have more grains and they'd be closer together and be more protective.

That is, assuming a 'grain' is what I think it is.

The higher the number, the thicker the jacket... It's being measured in millimeters of thickness. Thickest you can get would probably be best, but also the hottest. I've heard that perforated leather is a good buy, lets air in and out, but protects like leather. Good luck!

That size corresponds with thickness. The reason they are listed for a range of size, 1.2-1.4mm is because a side of leather is not completely flat and even. This is due in part of 1) the cow...it doesn't grow "even" pieces of hide, and 2) the tannery that cut it. When they split leather the run the whole piece through. Since leather moves, its thickness is not even throughout the piece.

The thickness of leather can also be listed in oz.

1oz = 1/64in = .39mm
