because "crotch rocket" by todays standard means sport bike, then it would indeed be the Honda Interceptor. Even the trade mags give the Interceptor props for being the first sport bike.

And oh ya, I had one. They were great bikes. Scary fast, handled great. They didnt last long at the top, though, thanks to Suzuki. I had mine up to 140, with more throttle left. Scared me.
Did you have the 1000cc?

I have an 84 VF700F, and scary fast isn't a word I would use to describe it (I've been on a 750 too).

But I cast my vote for the 83 Interceptor as the first modern sports bike.

If we are talking about crotch rockets being what we see sports bikes are like today... then I can mention what ive read in some magazines.

Ive heard of the honda Interceptor fitting the name, but also a bike that hans't been mentioned yet, the honda hurricane.

Interceptor - 1983
Hurricane - 1987. Inbetween there was the '84 Ninja 900, '85 FZ750 and '85 Gixxer.

The highpoints of early eighties superbikes are the Z1 and the CBX1000

Although I recently saw a Z1300 which just seemed to be a beast.

I don't know much about the history of the sport bike, but I do know what a fast bike is like. Is THIS anything like your scary fast? Sorry about the camera, my mount was messing up that day.

No that's just quick.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

I think that qualifies as quick and fast. 150+ is scary fast to me, and I think he probably was well past that.

If you notice, I was only in 4th gear. I had two more to go.

Funny, I was just watching the History Channel about Motorcycles. The British Cafe racers paved the way for all these high performance machines.

How they got a Vincent engine in a Norton frame is beyond me.

Kawasaki Z1, 1973. Honda CBX1000, 1978. Add to the mix the Laverda Jota, 1976.

Definitely highpoints but in the 1970's.

Just being picky. :P
