Is it possible to hook this up?

#1 Unread post by Slap-Bassist531 »

OK I was kind of wondering because it seems lately cops are out to get people with motorcycles and/or sportcars (for example my brother's car kind of is (I'll attach a pic)).... Right well, I got to thinking about it and like two months or so me and my bro were heading home from school (he had just picked me up) and we were drivin on a road with the speedlimit 25 mph and like a cop that didn't look like he had a radar (like we were going up a hill and right as he came over it he put on his sirens and i mean like RIGHT when he got there they turned on) and there were 4 cars in front and one car behind that were going the exact same speed if not faster! Well long story short he got a 200 buck ticket and we came home and our mom was well pretty pissed.... Anyway after that he bought a radar detector which has saved him from a few tickets (when a Ka or L radar shows up he slows to like a bit below limit), but anyways back to the point.... Would it be possible to like splice the power cord to the radar detector to the battery? If you can, how would you do it? Would you need to somehow set up a fuse or something? I know the cigarette power source his uses is 12v so are the motorcycle batteries the same? Thanks! BTW this is the link to a pic of his car: http://www.angelfire.com/ab8/slappy/cougar-s5.jpg[/img]

You should be able to rig that sort of thing up, yes. Not quite sure how, but it's certainly doable (some bikes even come with, or can be fitted with, a 'cigarette lighter outlet', which might be easier)

----

If the ticket was for speeding (and not something stupid like window tint) then I'd say fight it.

Ask for the video footage of the incident (most patrol cars have cameras now).

Ask if the radar gun has been calibrated recently, and ask for the documents to prove it (this is required in some states, and if it hasn't been calibrated in a year they'll throw out the ticket)

Ask if the officer has been certified to use a radar gun (in MI, it is suggested that any radar reading taken by a non-certified officer be dismissed)

In Michigan, if the officer is not certified and they choose to allow the radar evidence, then the officer is required to be able to: 1) Explain the basic principles of how radar timing works and, 2) Be able to correctly indentify, name, and explain the basic purposes of the major components of the radar gun/equipment.

If he at any times explains something that doesn't make sense (Timing, obstructions) call him on it. :P

why not just go the speed limit and save everyone your hassle? sounds like your brother likes to speed and that radar detector wont save him forever. besides young guy driving a red sports looking car will get the cops attention every single time.

Yes you can quite easily get a power outlet for your motorcycle. It's a little more trouble to hook the radar detector to the battery but it's certainly doable - just wire it straight to the battery terminals and make sure you get the correct least on the correct terminals. The center of the plug on the detector will be the pos and the outside will be the neg or ground. Make sure you turn it off when you park or it could drain your battery (in a month, not overnight).

Ahh, but see as I said we were going the flow of traffic and if we went the exact speed limit it'd make more of a hassle because then thered be a few pissed off drivers but i just want one so I know when to slow down to exact or below the speed limit, and it doesn't quite help that we'd be in a sportsbike so that'd definitaly catch his eye....

dont worry about the flow of traffic and go by the speed limit its fairly simple. if your already having problems with speed in a car, a sports bike is going to only make things worse for you. radar detectors arent 100% accurate, youll start to rely on it way to much and your speeds will go higher and higher cause you think no cop is around. then suddenly your being pulled over. most insurance companys double the costs when you get your first speeding ticket... but do what you want.
