A belt will last for many thousands of miles.

The belt will transfer more power to the rear wheel than shaft drive. Its just me but I wouldn't feel secure riding any belt drive far from home, if it was me I would carry an extra belt and the tools with me or change the belt every 6 months as a regular maintance item.

It's a very good starter cruiser. Many people buy the bike for that, and some continue to keep themj for quite a while. I started with my current bike a Suzuki M50 (805cc). I rode a friend's bike (V-Star650), and I did like mine better.... why" it definitely had more power. What I found was that an 800cc cruiser is not too big for a beginner.

I love my Vulcan 900. I couldn't be happier with it, although, there's not much in aftermarket for customizing her.
