The FBI’s report once again confirmed that violent crime rates are lower in states with Right-to-Carry (RTC) laws. In 2005, RTC states had, on average, 22% lower total violent crime, 30% less murder, 46% lower robbery, and 12% lower aggravated assault rates, compared to the rest of the country.

Yeah I know the NRA wouldn't really be considered an objective source on this issue but they are quoting the FBI. Anyway, I thought it was an intresting statistic.

Between 1995 (calender year) and 2005/06 (April to March financial year), violent crime in England & Wales fell by 43%.
In 2005/06 there were 765 homicides, including the 52 victims of the 7 July 2005 London bombings.
The population of England and Wales is 53,046,000 (out of the UK total - including Scotland and Northern Ireland of 59,835,000), which translates as 1.4 homicides per 100,000 residents.

By comparison, in 2000, police in the United States reported 5.5 murders for every 100,000 of population.
In addition, 70% of murders in the United States involve firearms (of which 75% used are illegally obtained) compared to 9.4% in the United Kingdom (77 out of 820 in 2004/05).

Both New York City and London have over 7 million residents, with New York reporting 6.9 murders per 100,000 people in 2004 to London's 2.4 per 100,000, also in 2004.

Kal, I see your point. The stats you've provided are very enlightening. What they prove is that because of the availability of guns America is more dangerous place so we need to carry guns to protect ourselves.

Yes... probably on a whole, yes.

Who commits most of the murders here? Poor people fighting over drugs and/or gang violence. Sure, there are always others, but most of the people who get the illegal firearms are the drug dealers and gang members. In other words, people who are criminals already, otherwise they would be able to obtain one legally (and just file the serials off if they so desired).

Now, I don't consider myself a racist, it just happens that the majority of the people who live in less than ideal economic conditions are black.


Check out the site. It also shows that people generally kill others of the same race. Apparently, white people barely ever kill black people...hah. Most of the interracial homicides involve strangers (read: muggings and holdups).

Handguns are the primary source of homicide, apparently. They have been working to reduce this, but I don't know the best way to do that. "Other guns" are much, much lower on the list... so they better not touch my damn rifles! Knives should be taken away first

I lived in Nottingham for many years. Nottingham is perceived as the Gun Crime capital of the UK. It was th first city in the UK to insitute routinely armed foot patrols. That probably dosnt sound like a big deal to yourselves as every Police officer in the States is armed, but over here it was a very big deal.

Sooner or later it turns out that most of the shooting victims in Nottingham are related to drugs. Yet another reason why I cleaned up my act - thats a whole other amusing story.

Knives over here are restricted. If you are under 16 you cannot buy a knife from a shop. Carrying a knife with a blade over an inch and a half or carry a double edged 'combat' knife will probably see you getting done for going equiped and/or carrying a concealed weapon.

My brother, the Chef, has to carry his knives securely and prove that he cannot gain access to them in a reasonable amount of time.

All that said, after a few days in Orlando I did settle down and the space between my shoulder blades stopped itching so I went shooting just because I miss going shooting over here.

Here in JPN firearms are prohibited, except for shotguns. Knives are also regulated and not allowed to be carried (what I heard, I'm not 100% on that - but I wasn't about to find out the wrong way).

I'm dying to shoot my pistols back home. I use to go to the range at least once a week. And don't even taunt me about doe season - dad does that enough. I don't like that I had to stop carrying my folding pocketknife. I used it a lot for random cutting duties (no, not people). Though I still carry the Leatherman in the truck.

JPN is a pretty safe country. You could leave your wallet and child on a park bench and when you return a day later, it is still there or has been taken to the closest policebox. It's a nice atmosphere. However, there's still crime/violence, it just happens less often. Bad guys are bad guys and they do and use what they can when they decide to cause trouble. Around here people get run over by drunks or beat to death.

Most violent crime over here takes place at traditional pub kicking out time, which is why the Police supported 24 hour opening. It'll take a few years for it to make a difference in our society but it should lead to less violent incidents as there will be less drunken people in the kebab shops at the same time.

Well, violence is a subject I've been researching for quite a while, especially since in any given year, 8-10% of homicide victims in the city where I leave and work are killed by recent graduates of the school where I work. Yes, it's a very tough neighborhood. Four years ago we had 640 students. We are down to 430 now, and 45 or 50 of those are transfers from other middle schools who were given the choice by their former principals to transfer voluntarily or face legal action to force a transfer to alternative education facilities (reform school).

Some interesting facts:

The number one cause of death for young black men is young black men.
The number one cause of death of young Mexican men is young Mexican men.
The number one cause of death of young white men is driving drunk.
A young white man is safer serving in Iraq than driving his own car through high school.
White and Mexican men are 6 times as likely to stay with the mother of their illegitimate child than black men.
A white is 19 times as likely to be attacked by a black as a black is to be attacked by a white.
A black is 9 times as likely to use a weapon to initiate a violent confrontation than a white.
Finally, to correct the statement earlier in the thread that there are more blacks living in poverty than any other race, that simply isn’t true. There are more whites living in poverty in the US than there are blacks living in poverty. In fact, there are almost as many whites living in poverty as there are blacks of all economic strata living in the United States.

Isn’t not racism, people, it’s facts. The question is, what are YOU going to do about it?

Ratio-wise? I wasn't referring to pure numbers. There are more whites in the country than blacks, so it would be more likely that there would be a higher number, but not percentage.

The old addage, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink," applies here. If anyone living in poverty wants a way out, the road is paved with financial aid, free child care, free housing, free medical care, ad nauseum. Therefore, poverty is a choice. Escaping poverty requires effort and bearing the scorn of those you leave behind. Hundreds of thousands of people in the U. S. are making that effort every day. Hundreds of thousands of others do not. The way those who make the effort are treated by those who don't might explain why the escapees never look back, and I don't blame them.
