Bike won't start. Please help!

#1 Unread post by Decoy »

Got the bike out of storage this weekend, checked everything out, made sure the battery was charged, etc. Put battery back in, went to start and all it did was make this rapid, loud clicking noise. Could something be shorting somewhere, something wrong with the starter? The bike is a 2004 Suzuki Bandit 1200S. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds stupid but are absoultely sure that battery is charged? Are the headlights strong?

When my bike has a dead battery it makes that clicky noise.

Gas in the tank?

I'm no mechanic, but the starter is the first thing I'd be looking at.

I'm pretty sure it's charged. Lights come on, instruments are on. When I test the voltage with the charger it reads 12.5.

Must be starter then. I have seen mechanics hit the starter with a hammer and it starts up as a diagnostic, but only on a car i would not suggest this on a motorcycle!!

That clicking noise is the solenoid/starter relay attempting to do something. First thing I'd check (double check) is that your battery is actually fully charged. After that, start looking for loose wires in the starter circuit, and finally you can check for faulty parts with a multimeter if it comes to that.

Starting with the battery is the easiest.

This belongs in the tech support forums.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
