Valve adjustments...

#1 Unread post by Ian522 »

I have an old Honda twin, only about 7k miles on her but i have no idea when it last had a valve check/adjustment, plus the manual recommends doing a check at 8k anyway. The clymer manual lists the specs but doesnt give you a step by step guide on how to do it.

Is it a complicated process? Or pretty idiot proof? I have tools and im somewhat mechanically inclined and id rather not deal with taking it to a shop, most of them around here are a pain in the "O Ring" to deal with.

Depends what kind of adjusters you have.

Screw and Tappet - easy
Shim over bucket - fairly simple with the right tools
Shim under bucket - you better have a ton of patience, and know how to keep things organized, or you're going to want to kill yourself.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
