I think after I watch Lost Ill hook the battery back up. . .any idea what I should be looking for?
Because.... he's an idiot? Dunno, without the diagram I cannot know for sure, but I'll bet dollars to donuts the battery is involved in the ignition system.

The starter motor should turn, and you should hear the engine start... making noise? You know-like a car engine? Once it does that release the start button, and the engine should continue to turn without you pressing the starter button.

What's that fetish called again?
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Ok hooked up the battery. Engine turned as it should have, and it let me throttle it. However, it wouldnt go unless I had the clutch gripped and not just the bike in neutral - so I dunno what that is about.

You need to learn some basic terminology.

What does "let me throttle it" mean?

What does "wouldn't go" mean?

What does "clutch gripped" mean?

Assumptions - the engine is actually running - this is good and indicates that the problem was with your battery, not the alternator. If your battery dies while the bike is running, then there is a problem with the charging system (alternator)

Wouldn't go - bike doesn't move forwards? You need to be in gear to do so.

clutch gripped - clutch is pulled and as a result no power is transfered to the rear wheel... if you've got the kickstand down and put it in gear the engine should die.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Wouldnt go in my non-mc speak means the engine wouldnt run. Or it did, but it slowly died down, like if the engines power were water, then the water ran out of a cup, and you could hear it getting less and less full until it stopped.

Throttle - I just cranked the throttle and it did its thing.

Clutch gripped? I gripped the clutch. . .dunno how to describe it any other way. Kickstand isnt down, but the center stand is.

So at this point - Im assuming it was just the battery, as doing all the steps I was told to do (open the choke a bit, hold down the clutch, set sucker in neutral, and hit "Go") made the engine run without it dying out when I took my finger off the starter.

If the kickstand or center stand is down and the bike is in gear it will kill the engine when you release the clutch. This is a safety feature.

Sounds like your bike is fine, tell your neighbour he's an idiot for me.

Ahhh I cant say that. . .I think hes more "car" inclined than bike quite honestly - because someone was telling me at work that a car behaves exactly as the guy was saying the bike would. At the least he helped me get the battery in my machine, and gave me some automobile buying tips that would have been nice to know when I picked up this machine.

Im just glad its fine because I was depressed for awhile there. While the bike is going to be fun, it was a personal neccesity that I get it and didnt want to have spent that much money for nothing.

I don't know much of anything about cars so I couldn't confirm or deny his apparent knowledge.

But his lack of insight into what a solenoid does makes me doubt his knowledge... that and the fact he disconnected the positive end of an installed battery indicates a basic lack of safety precautions taken by most mechanics.

Again, I probably explained it ALL wrong. . .gods truth not even 15 seconds after I left him, I forgot what the hell he had said. I will agree about the battery while bike is on business. . .i deferred to his wisdom, but all I could think was "Dude I hope your personal affairs are in order". Plus, on a personal note, I didnt mind listening to him - hes got Hepatitis, and is going to die soon, so so long as he didn't break my bike, I indulged him (although he wanted to "work" on it today. . .but I said no no - I think its fine - lol).

I did manage to get a co-worker who used to teach riding, and we spent three hours together. i learned today:

the clutch is meant to be nurtured, not harshly set out about its business. . .

i need a new seat, or my manhood is going to feel like it was put through the ringer everytime i want to go somewhere. . .

i have a huge head. . .something i knew from marine boot-camp, but didnt realize how big until i had this crock pot masquerading as a helmet strapped on my head. . .it 100% resembles Lord Dark Helmet

i cant turn for poo-cakes. . .

and the most important thing: i love this bike. . .
