I dont get the deal with only waving to certain bike types/brands.

I understand with the Jeep wave, too many cars on the road...but not enough bikes on the road to justify selectivity like that.

I pretty much always wave, even if it's just a finger lift off the bars while I'm still holding on combined w/ a head nod

A wave or a nod depending on circumstances. I would guess about 90% of riders around here do the same. Passengers around here wave as much as the riders do - kinda neat.

I wave to everyone (except scooters). I ride a sportbike and my bud rides a harley. That alone gets us some strange looks

After getting my first and only bike (2005 Triumph Tiger) off of the trailer and nearly riding it right through the hedge  , I rode about 2 miles before meeting another bike. Luckily I was right at a parking lot entry when I raised my hand up to wave which hit the mirror and turned me right into the lot.

Giving the biker wave.

I wave back most of the time as long as my hand is free. I even waved at a man on a small scooter the other day. I looked at me in disbelief. :)
I nod otherwise. Sometimes I get caught be surprise by another rider, in which case I just miss one. That's usually when traffic is heavy or rush hour.
see you on the highway. 8)

Only as a safety preference, I use the head nod. Last thing I need is a new bad riding habit.

I remember the first time I rode on my bike, and I pass a total stranger in the opposite direction...and he throws up a hand and waves

WHAT THE ****!?

HOLY CRAP! THAT GUY JUST ACKNOWLEDGED ME!!! IN A POSITIVE MANNER!

Only time anybody puts a hand up around here is to flip you off, whether or not you deserved it...

Since then, I wave whenever I can. Sometimes I just don't see people to wave at because of traffic or roads or whatever, then I see them it's too late/unsafe to throw out a hand.

same.
When another biker waves at me, it makes me feel good inside, like I'm part of the family, so I definitely wave also. 8) If it's got two wheels, I throw my arm out, even scooters, i don't care. :D

I'll also admit I don't think I know "the proper" way to wave, as it looks like I'm waving goodbye to a friend I will not see for the rest of my life..
The cruiser guys seem to stick their hand out to the side with two fingers out, and sportbikers seem to take two fingers, hold them low and in front of them, and point them in my direction.
If you see a huge arm waving/swaying back and forth, it's me
