New to the site and riding

#1 Unread post by motorcyclinmama »

Hello to everyone, I am very happy I found this site. I've been hanging around for a few days reading, and have found this site to be very informative, and friendly.

I just started to ride about a month and a half ago. This is a time in my life I never imagined would EVER happen. I mean that literaly. I have hated motorcycles for the last 15 years. To the point of forbidding my 16 yr old son and my husband who love bikes from ever getting one. I told them both that if they ever brought one home I would dismantle it and throw it in the street.
The reason for this is because 15 years ago my now husband and I were at the beginning of our relationship. He had a 1991 Kawasaki Concorse. He loved that bike, and rode it daily. He had been riding bikes for 15 years prior to us.
Anyway he took me for my first ride going 130 miles an hour, and scared the c*** out of me. I wouldn't ride anymore, but he told me he only did it to scare me into holding on tighter to him. A month later he and his best friend were hit by a car on that bike, and almost killed.
Hubby was in intensive care for a long time with extesive injuries, that he still has scars from. Anyway from that day on I forbid him another bike.
Fastforward to 2 months ago. My 2 sons and hubby wanted to go to Kawasaki dealership to look at bikes.
Hubby was admiring a Vulcan 2000 Classic LT. I could see the hunger in his eyes so I said buy it. It was a spur of the moment comment, but I felt comfortable saying it. He was stunned and thought I was joking at first.
I figured he was 44 and more mature and responsible now. I also want him to enjoy himself. To the point he bought, and drove home that day a brand new Vulcan 2000.
I rode with him for 2 weeks, listening to you should get one too. I kept saying no way. I just knew I would hate it so I wouldn't even think it.
Then one Sunday I said fine lets go look at them. That day I bought a Vulcan 500, and have never looked back.
I am SOOOO glad I bought my bike. I got my permit, and my hubby taught me to ride. Now my bike has a thousand miles on it, and hopefully many more to come. I have never felt so free or alive as I do on my bike. I don't know why it took me so long to realize bikes aren't bad.
I guess I just needed time to work through all my fears. I am so happy and excited I did. I now want to ride all the time, and my husband Jerry calls me his motorcyclin mama. :P
Soon my 16 year old son and I are taking our MSF course together.

Sorry this is so long. I love to talk!

I hope I can make many friends here.

That kicks "O Ring".

I think many of us are pretrained about the evils of motorcycles. When ones fears are justified (hubby getting hit on the bike) it ramps them up.

I'm glad you gave in. It was good to your husband who has been true to you for 15 years by not getting a bike, and good for your relationship which is ever evolving as we all know who have a spouse.

And its always good to see another lady riding. You picked a good bike for yourself. Your son's friends are probably drooling over his biker mom now.

I don't mind at all, I know I chose a long name.
I am very happy to have overcome my fears, because now I know what a joy riding can be. :)

I love your story and I think it is one that is shared by many who now ride. I didn't get my first bike until 37 and only because I was newly divorced from a woman who had the same initial attitude you used to have. And until you actually ride, you will never know the thrill of riding. Congrats on your new life and stay safe!

Ah gotta love the Vulcan 500 and its engine! Although... maybe I'm partial since our two bikes share the same engine

Welcome to TMW! Oh, and that story was just awesome... cool how things turned around and now you are enjoying life in a new way!
