Hornet wont pull when under load
Hi,I've got a hornet 600 my/2000.It's had cbr carbs fitted.I've had it stood for about 3 months or so whilst i passed my test. The battery was flat.Initially it wouldn't start.Weak spark.I replaced the plugs(tank off etc). The bike now starts and idles fine gets up to temp ok.It revs ok when in neutral. As soon as you try to set off and open the throttle it just dies and splutters and stops. It restarts ok and idles ok and revs ok.I've found that the connector for the throttle position sensor has been replaced by three terminals these were insecure i've tried all combinations for them to be connected.I think ive got it right could this be the problem?.The battery is not fully charged.I was running it with the head light on.Could this be drawing to much power and causing miss fire.I've got a lot of technical abilty on cars but this is my first big bike.Any tips of what to check and try will most appreciated.

Yup, gasoline breaks down very quickly when it's got time to sit. It turns into a sort of varnish that coats the insides of your carbs. This isn't a big deal in most cases, but what happens is there are jets (small openings) that allow metered amounts of fuel to pass through them. If the varnish clogs these little holes then you won't get enough gas for a given RPM range.
As for the tps... messing with that is rarely a good thing, problem is that now it's off (and with you running CBR carbs) things are going to be odd. LEts try a good solid cleaning first, and hopefully that will take care of the problem.
Brake clean and compressed air squirted through all the openings. Remove the jets, clean inside, then reinstall the jets (they should all come out with a flathead screwdriver.
You do not need to break the carb bank apart to clean it, just remove from the bike, and remove the float bowls. Keep everything seperate and be careful not to tear o-rings/gaskets.
Best of luck to you.
Nice bike btw

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Sev, what does the bike use the TPS for, anyways? Since it's carbed, the ECU can't change anything with fuel... must be able to play with ignition timing or something, I suppose. Perhaps PAIR valve shenanigans?

I only know a couple of people who have done it. And from what i understand the difference is that the Hornet has a 34 mm carb and header, and the cbr has a 36mm carb and header. This might mean more power, but I think you're still trying to squeeze it through the 34mm header even if you switch the carbs. Too be perfectly honest, I'm not sure why anyone would do it.
But I could be totally wrong.

neutral switch
I'm kind of new to this but could this be a safty switch problem. If it runs fine until you put it into gear then it dies. I know on some bikes if your kickstand is down and you shift into gear it will cut the engine. If the kickstand switch is stuck or worn it still will cut the engine. Hope this helps and good luck.
