Honda 2002 carb problems???

#1 Unread post by hondaone »

Hello everyone, This is my first time on TMW. I have a question regarding my 2002 Honda Shadow 1100 Sabre. I had the bike since 03 & had some Vance & Hines pipes put on in 03. The bike ran great until 06 when it would backfire and make tremendously loud pops. Could I get any suggestions regarding this problem?

Thanks everyone!

When does it backfire and pop? While you accelerating or deaccelerating?
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

check yor spark-plugs. They may be worn out. to do so you can take them out, if there is a lot of damage you should be able to see it otherwise while out plug it into the spark-plug cable and try friring the bike up and see if there is a spark.

popping/backfiring

Thanks for the feedback everyone,

I did check the plugs, they seem fine. However, when I do use the choke to experiment, I find that the popping/backfiring is gone when the choke is 1/2 way. I still could use some more suggestions though.

Thanks again,

I would advise installing a jet kit if you did not do so when you installed the pipes. Aftermarket pipes usually flow more, plus all stock bikes are jetted too lean because of EPA regulations, so you need to richen up the carbs. If you do not want to purchase the kit, the idle mixture plugs will need to be adjusted to three turns out. You will need to drill the brass tamper proof plugs in order to do this.
CHECK YOUR TIRE PRESSURE REGULARLY!!!
