Are all of my cylinders firing?

#1 Unread post by axeman »

I was wondering what the best way to check and make sure all four of my cylinders are firing. A friend of mine thinks that one of them is not. What he did was spit on each of the four pipes of the manifold. One of them DID seem less hot then the others. This is referring to the same bike as my other thread. 94 Yamaha YZF600R. Thanks.

Spit as an analysis tool...heh, that's a new one.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

mmmm, you could use a spark plug light...you put it in place of the spark plug there on your s.p wire.

Or, you could just unscrew the plug from the engine, but plugged into the wire and crank it over

haha, yea. It did seem like the #1 pipe was much less warm than the others though. The spit just rolled off of the #2-4 pipes and dried itself instantly, whereas the spit on the #1 pipe didn't even give much of a sizzle. It's disgusting, but I think it works.

I'm not looking for a spark, I know I have spark. I think #1 may not be getting enough fuel, I don't know.

While the engine is running, get a pair of rubber gripped pliers and pull the plug wire off the plug. If the engine starts to die or change rpms or stumble then that cylinder is working. If nothing changes when you pull the plug wire then that cylinder is, for some reason or another, not working. Of course that will not diagnose why that cylinder is bad.

That sounds dangerous to me for some reason.
