my first 1000 miles...

so i hit 1000 miles today in my riding 'career'. been riding for about 2 months now and loving it more and more.

some observations. i took the MSF last summer, so i had a lot of time off between passing the class and getting my bike. it took a bit to remember some of the finer points like slow speed counter steering/maneuvering. I have it pretty good now.

as some other noobs here have said, things like wind blasts can be a bit daunting the first time you hit the highway at 60+mph. but it doesn't take too long to get the hang of it though.

i've experienced the numb throttle hand from gripping too hard. i've finally relaxed that issue. i've gotten used to switching to my reserve while going 65mph.

i live in the country, so most of my riding is on winding country roads. i've done some parkways. and a small bit of time on a major highway. some in town riding dealing with stop and go traffic. need to do more of that.

anyway. I gotta say that both the MSF and this web page has taught me so much. I appreciate everyones help. I still have a lot more to learn and look forward to the miles ahead.

Congrats on your 1000 mile milestone. If I lived in the mountains, I'd be doing 1000 miles a week, lol. I love mountain twisties more than any other kind of road.

I live in WV, we have excellent winding, mountainous roads and I put 1000 miles on my bike in 10 days

WV does have some nice roads I plan to chart a course into it for next weekend.

It is a fun trip, especially if you are lucky enough to take the BRP down. The Gap is slow going, except for the guys who ride it every weekend. You guys probably know most of the mountain riding hazards, meaning weather in this case. When we went, it was 80' and sunny, then 45' and raining with an hour ride back to the hotel. I got a touch of hypothermia then - ugh!

Anyway, congrats on the 1000 miles. They will start rolling along soon enough. My new bike is three weeks old, and I am over 800 already

When I rode from PA down through W.V. it was great. One of the best rides I ever had. Going to Deal's gap in about 2 weeks. Looking forward to it.

There are probably places closer to the Gap, but if you are around Waynesville, there is a great bike shop there: http://www.waynesvillecycle.com/ - The Suzi I was riding there broke down and they squared me away as quickly as they could. They know folks are from out of town, so they try to get you on the road as fast as possible. They have a good selection of gear too.

My one issue with the Gap was that a lot of car groups go there... Mini Coopers, little sportscars... They are not too bad, but tend to think they can corner faster than is realistic and come over the yellow at times. Every now and then you get a land yacht or truck puttering through too, but it's only eleven miles - ride it twice

thanks all. Yes I've done some riding on the BRP and it's fantastic. I look forward to some more extended trips south on it. Deal's Gap sounds real good. I've probably been down there before a few yrs ago, but I dont remember it specifically.
