I called the dealer and told him about the hard start and the high idle. He told me to bring it in, said it shouldn't be that high and he will take a look at it. I was looking forward to wednesday cuz the rain was finally going to break and I was planning on going for a ride along the coast, now I have to do this instead......bummer :?

The 250 has an idle screw on it, you can easily adjust the idle yourself. My friend's new 250 idled very high too when he first got it.

When I first picked it up and few rides afterwards it idled fine...I remember it now. It got higher gradually that I didn't even notice it till it was pointed out to me. I remember being at the dealership and when I first got it started I was looking down at the cluster and it was at 1200rpm. Didn't even notice it getting higher till friend said something about it this past saturday. And that's when I started having trouble starting it too. So to be on the safe side I am going to bring it in. I am afraid the bad start and high idle are connected some how. Cuz also on friday when I took it out it kept stalling in first from a start. At first I thought I was doing a crappy job getting it to go and was dumping the clutch or something. But it happened 4x in a row and I was like, no way is it all of a sudden me. I finally gave it tons of throttle and it was bogging alot till I got it 2nd. I quickly took it straight home. I left it for a few hours and tried it again (also the nuetral light wasnt working, but worked fine when I tried the bike again, figured everything was just a glitch) When I got it started again I thought I heard this hissing noise under cluster area. I was afraid that I got a leak in my front tire or something so I made a mental note to keep an eye on my tire (tire still fine though, so air sound from something else). So, I am thinking that none of this is coincendental. I think there might be more to it. At first I thought that these are just things that happen, or I don't know any better and all of it could be normal. But, now......not so sure.

Duffy wrote: Also, Veda, you have said bike as me. When you are idle. EIther at a stop light, or in nuetral, does your idle high?? Mine idles around 3-4rpms. One time when I was riding with my friend who has a honda cbr1000 his was practically silent and he was looking at mine funny (we were at a stop light side by side) and asked if it always idles so high. Since it's new, and I'm new, I don't know if its suppose to do that.
Yeah, mine idled right around 3k when I first got it. It's pretty common according to the people on ninja250.com - something about the factory setting it higher so it passes federal emissions standards.(?) The dealer turned mine down some at my 600 mile service, but it's still higher than it should be. Manual says 1300. I do need to play with mine but haven't gotten a chance.

It seems like the people above are probably right on target. I had the same types of problems when I was riding a ninja 250. It turned out that I had both of the above problems, it was flooded so I had to flush it, then I lowered the idle with the easily accessible idle screw. I had no problems at all after that. Best of luck to ya!
