when i hook the bike up to a battery charger the bike starts without rolling over even once ...but when i unhook the battery charger the bike dies instantly ...what is not working that should keep it running?

The charging system does not appear to be putting out any current. Could be a bad connection or failed component. Check the fuses, the wires, the ground connections, etc.
Sounds like your battery is dead as well. Can you charge the battery, then have the bike work?
If you're charging the battery with an external charger, then the bike dies when you remove the charger, you've got a dead battery. Even if the charging system were shot, a battery that can retain a charge should run the ignition system for a long time.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
I would agree that your battery is shot, but if you just gotta be sure, yank it out and go to your nearest Auto Parts store where they will test it for you. Probably free of charge
