With the more expensive brands of helmet you are paying for the high level of research and development that their manufacturers undertake. But as far as I can see, Arai or Shoei lids, for example, are not necessarily safer or more comfortable or quieter just because they are dearer. My £350 Arai Astro J is great in most respects. It is light, it is comfortable, it has the CE saferty rating, it has good ventilation, it has detachable linings. But it's one of the noisiest helmets I have ever worn, and the Arai visor removal system can be a pain until you get used to it.

You won't actually know how safe a helmet is until you use it, which is going to be too late. The only thing you can put any trust in is the safety rating, and if a cheap helmet and an expensive one both have the safety rating, then as far as you can tell they are equally safe. As far as I know there is no other objective way you can judge which is the safest.

For a more oval fit instead of round, try a KBC helmet Model VR-1. Like yourself, I had a lot of trouble finding a helmet that fit well and comfortably, until I found my KBC.
The KBC costs a little over $300. CDN.

I got a black one and then I put some reflective decals on it. The decals I got are black so they don't show in the daytime, but they sure light up at night when light hits them.
Decals are available in quite a variety of shapes and colours, so if a person does not want to pay for graphics, decals could be applied.

Just needed to remove the space between the "/" and the "k".

I'm going to look into trying some of these out, since my current Gmax helmet creates too much frontal pressure. Also I was informed on a different post about helmets that HJC Symax and CL-14 are good for oval heads.

I'll second the nomination for the KBC VR-1. I wanted an Icon Mainframe, but the VR-1 fit my head better. So I bought it. I only paid $200 Cnd for mine last january, because the VR-1 is now out of production, replaced by the VR-2. They look very similar, if you can find a VR-1 in someone's backroom, you can probably get a good deal on it. The KBC has one of the nicest interior linings in any price range to me, but the venting system doesn't seem to change at all from open to closed. Not that I care about venting, but if I did, this system don't work. The front visor de-fog part works o.k.

Personally I got a Nolan Exlite Helmet, has good air flow for my bonce (head) At the time I got mine they cost £240. I got mine in a sale for £70. But it is extra small in size.
