Stripping/ sanding/ scotch bright/ clear coating a gas tank?

#1 Unread post by Meet The Twins »

Basically I have a old CB500T that I just want to freshen up alittle. I was planning to use aircraft grade laquer (sp?) thinner, sand paper, scotch bright, and a rattle can clear coat to stop rust.

Would that be the proper process of giving my tank a WWII fighter brushed aluminum look?

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't over looking something.

Thanks guys!

I've also seen it done with a higher grade sand paper, just keep sanding and it looks like brushed steel at the end.

The clearcoat might end up making it look shiney.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Is it possible to use a semi-gloss clear coat?? I have seen a reference to 'eggshell clear', for example which I read was a name for a not-shiny clearcoat (I've recently been looking at paint websites for the Duc)

But wont the tank rust over if I dont clear coat it? I would rather leave it raw but I thought I cant.

If you wax it regularly it shouldn't rust...

big assumption on my part.
