Replacing rear tire
Replacing rear tire
I need to replace my rear tire on my 80' yamaha xs400 special II because there isn't much tread left. The bike is I was wondering if I should look for a dealer or just a repair shop. Also if I should take in just the tire or the whole bike. My experience with motorcycle tires stops with "hey there ain't much tread left down there." Is it simple for me to pull the tire off? Brand of tire for replacement? The old one was a yokohama 120/90-16 63s. Also can anyone recomend a bike shop near Bloomington MN.

Most repair shops that sell tyres mount tyres, (a few will even mount free if bought from them) no need for dealer. As to tyre or bike this depends on your mechanical ability. Most likely cheaper unless the mount free....ASK
If you need a 120 (with this size make sure it is rear or universal and not front fittment) your selection will be somewhat limited (might have to special order) but if you go to a 130 or 140 width there are a lot more on the market.
As to brand the big question is your budget. Some companys only build high end tyres, like Metzler. Some, like GBC, and DURO only offer cheaper tyres. Others like Dunlop, Avon, and even Chin Shin/Maxxis have a wide range. Price may be as low as $40 and as high as $400 for same size.
There are tyres designed for different types of riding as well as bikes. (sport, touring, dual sport....etc) Used to be that to increase mileage you lost handling, but newer technologys are able to achive both.

~*UPDATE*~
I went to the local yamaha dealer and as suggested there where no 120's in stock. They also suggested the 130 which was in stock and I went for it. The only problem was my chain guard was a little close and would rub on the tire. There was plenty of room to nudge the gaurd over and now I have a brand new tire on my bike.
