Exhaust pop

#1 Unread post by woodchuckchuck »

Hi- I tried searcing this forum for help because you may have addressed this issue in the past but came up empty. My bike is a 2000 Suzuki LS 650 Savage and has served me well in the past year or so. A second or so after I shut the motor off, or if I let off the throttle quickly when coming to a stop, there's a single POP coming from the muffler. Sometimes it's kinda loud, sometimes a soft POOF. This has happened since I bought the bike. I'm thinking unburned fuel igniting in the exhaust is causing this, and I've been told it could be too-lean or too-rich mixtire, too cold plug, too hot plug, etc. I'm not comfortable messing with the mixture so I try to ease off the throttle slowly when stopping, but I cant make the problem go away when shutting the motor off. Just looking for more opinions.

If you are like me and not comfortable mucking about with your fuel mixture or carb settings, do what I do.....take the bike to your local shop and have them look at it.
Always ask why.

Check for exhaust leaks, even the smallest leak will cause a backfire or a popping sound.

The Savage just does that, huge as single, when you close the throttle there's going to be some unburned gas sneaking past the exhaust valve that'll detonate inside the pipe. BANG!
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Too lean and exhaust leaks are the major causes. Have you put on a new exhaust? This could be the problem, leaking and making the carbs run lean.
