Is 2nd gear more clunky becasue of the pass through neutral?

I have a 1984 Nighthawk 750S. Just want to know if it's normal for it to be rather clunky going from 1st to 2nd? Is this due to the fact that the transmission is passing through neutral on it's way in to 2nd? The rest of the shifting is very effortless and quiet.

Could be normal, might just be a shifter fork that needs adjusting especially if the bike has high mileage on it. Try this guy for more detailed info: Nighthawk Owners.

how involved a procedure is adjusting a shift fork?
do you have to take the jugs off?

You need to pull the engine and split the case.

First of all shifting forks are NOT adjustable, they have to be replaced. A BAD shifting fork will not ingage the gear all the way, and cause the gear to just out under acceleration. This is from a BENT shifting fork. I wouldn't split the cases, even if you did put in a new fork, it would probably do the same thing, and cost you $$$ and down time you could be out riding. Persoanlly I would add some Lucas Oil Treatment, you can get it at NAPA. this stuff works wonders. I put it in a Kawasaki KZ1000ST that sounded like it was coming apart. Made it run great, and quieted it right down. This stuff will make your clutch work better too.
